Chest part deux...

The second chest is done.  One hinge was a little tight but overall happy with it.  Here are some pictures.  This version of the chest has no lock.  My understanding is that it will be part of a gift package to Ansteorra.

Nice chest!  (I have wanting to say that...)  Seriously, though- it looks great, and I will remember the tip about cooking the hinges in the oven!

Here's another tip to prevent a mistake I've made twice now.  When you make nails, you quench the nails in the final step to free them from the heading tool.  The stock that I am using for the nails must be of a higher carbon content.  The nails end up being extremely difficult to cleat over because the harden up.  So, after making the nails, test their hardness.  If they are too hard, you can normalize or anneal them.  After that is done, you can cook them in the oven with the olive oil to make them look nice.  I ended up having to touch them up with paint after putting them on the chest because I didn't have time to re-cook them after annealing them.

Hehehe- you could always lubricate the heading tool with powdered borax before finishing the nail heads...
