I looked through my old photos and found a spring fuller I used for the finials. This spring fuller is 1" rod. The one I made this past weekend was 1/2" rod. Spring fullers are used to put a waist on metal. These 2 photos show what the spring fuller does for you.

Ahhh.... Now I know what we're talking about - I just never knew the correct name! (I just called it the "The round bent denty-thing that fits in the hardie hole that you whack with the hammer to put symmetrical dents into heated bar stock..." Did I ever explain that my smithing was mostly self-taught after passing my safety observation period at the Boone homestead?)
