Today, I picked up some new wire wheels to help on the polishing on the clock. The bigger score today was the 50# of S7 alloy steel. The stock is perfectly sized for making hammers and other tools. Specifically, the S7 is for top swages that I will use to create the clocks arbors (axles).

S7 is one of our favorite steels for die engraving (professionally, anyway- local scadian preference is W1). S7 is easy to cut or machine, and takes heat treatment well.
Lol, in some ways it takes heat treatment too well. When forging, I have to stay in the yellow-orange - orange range. As soon as the stuff cools to red, you cannot move it. Forge it yellow or white and it can crumble like cheese. Of course, that is why it is nice for smithing. A chisel will stay sharp even as it approaches 700 degrees.
